Fantasy Premier League tips: The best 5 goalkeepers to sign in FPL this season, from Alisson to Henderson

The days of £6m goalkeepers in Fantasy Premier League have been consigned to history, or at least so it seems.

The decision-makers over at FPL towers have capped the maximum starting price of shot-stoppers to £5.5m this year meaning that clean sheet magnets Alisson and Ederson have dropped half a million price. Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy has plummeted even further, with his new price tag of £5m representing a £1m drop from this time last year.

That decision looks likely to have a knock-on effect in the transfer market. In the past, FPL managers may have swerved keepers from bigger clubs due to their prohibitive price tags but at the time of writing, Mendy, Alisson and Ederson account for three of the four most-bought goalkeepers so far – along with Brighton’s Robert Sanchez.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale has gone the other way, rising from £4.5m to £5m, but on the whole, this season’s goalkeepers have been generously priced up, which is handy given the high number of premium outfield players to choose from.

When it comes to selecting a No 1, FPL managers tend to be split into two camps: the risk-averse and the gamblers. For the risk-averse, clean sheets are king which naturally leads to picking more expensive goalkeepers from top clubs who, in theory, play behind better defences; the gamblers, meanwhile, will snap up a cheaper alternative from lower down the division in the hope that they will rack up save and bonus points as well as the odd clean sheet.

Here are five options to consider for Gameweek 1 from a range of budgets:

Alisson (Liverpool)

Excellent as Alisson is, both as Liverpool’s last line of defence and an FPL asset, it has been tricky to make the case for signing him in the past given the abundance of options elsewhere in his team.

However, FPL’s highest-scoring goalkeeper last season is certainly a move viable asset this campaign due to his price drop. Along with Wolves’ Jose Sa, Alisson was the only keeper to provide an assist in 2021-22 and who can forget his goal against West Brom the previous campaign!

Price: £5.5m Points in 2021-22: 176 Opening fixtures: Fulham (a), Crystal Palace (h), Man Utd (a)

Nick Pope (Newcastle)

The top-scoring goalkeeper in the game back in 2019-20 while with previous club Burnley, Newcastle’s new No 1 Nick Pope has considerable FPL pedigree.

Pope tends to hoover up save and bonus points and may have a better chance of keeping clean sheets this year with Sven Botman joining Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Kieran Trippier in a solid-looking back four at St James’.

Price: £5.0m Points in 2021-22: 130 Opening fixtures: Nottingham Forest (h), Brighton (a), Man City (h)

Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Aaron Ramsdale was hugely popular as an FPL asset in the first half of the season and although his form dipped and his price tag has received a hike, he looks an excellent pick again this year.

Arsenal face just one of last season’s top six – Manchester United, away from home – in their opening eight gameweeks and are top of the fixture ticker during that period.

Robert Sanchez (Brighton)

Robert Sanchez was the budget goalkeeper of choice ahead of last season and looks to have reclaimed that tag again this year given he is currently selected by over 14 per cent of managers.

Only five players kept more clean sheets than Sanchez’s 11 in 2021-22 and his appeal is boosted by a relatively gentle start for the Seagulls.

Price: £4.5m Points in 2021-22: 126 Opening fixtures: Man Utd (a), Newcastle (h), West Ham (a)

Dean Henderson (Nottingham Forest)

A strategy that some FPL managers employ in the early weeks of a new season is to sign two first-choice goalkeepers and swap them based on who has – in theory – the easier fixture.

Nottingham Forest’s Dean Henderson could be a good rotation option with Sanchez early on and has FPL pedigree from his time with Sheffield United – he was the fourth-highest scoring keeper in 2019-20.
