Anthony Gordon transfer: Everton set to reject bids for £35m star as Newcastle eye ‘multiple’ Ligue 1 targets

Newcastle United are the latest club to test Everton’s resolve over highly-rated forward Anthony Gordon.

Tottenham have already had an offer rebuffed for Gordon and i understands Everton will take a similar line with Newcastle, who also retain an interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Last week’s sale of Richarlison has eased some of the financial burden the club was carrying after posting heavy losses in successive club accounts, which would have severely hampered their ability to buy players this summer.

i can reveal Everton’s stance remains that they have “zero interest” in allowing Gordon to leave, which was communicated to Newcastle.

The 21-year-old is attracting plenty of interest after his breakthrough season but is understood to be happy at Everton. He is under contract under 2025, having signed a deal in 2020, but there is a case for him to be rewarded with fresh terms to reflect his new-found status in the first team.

Indeed, the England under-21 international is viewed as a pivotal player around whom Frank Lampard wants to rebuild his Everton squad. But Newcastle’s interest in the player is long-standing and there is a possibility that they could return with another offer for the £35m-rated winger.

The Magpies’ approach reflects their desire to bring in talented young players who can develop with Eddie Howe’s squad rather than players already at their peak. They have an ongoing interest in exciting Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby but one senior source said they were exploring “multiple targets” – with interest in several players in Ligue 1.

They are also one of several clubs who have made an approach for Albania forward Armando Broja, who is understood to be open to moving to Newcastle. West Ham and Everton are in competition.

For the Toffees, the ongoing takeover intrigue has not distracted from recruitment efforts with director of football Kevin Thelwell and Lampard working on a number of targets.

They are interested in Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White while there is also ongoing interest in Jesse Lingard, although his wage demands mean he may end up elsewhere.

As i reported on Sunday, the Peter Kenyon-backed group continue to talk to the club over a possible takeover and released a statement on Tuesday confirming their interest was ongoing.

But sources close to owner Farhad Moshiri say he has “moved on” and is now concentrating on backing Lampard and completing the club’s stadium project.
