Whenever a Fantasy Premier League manager logs back into the game ahead of a new season, they invariably make a beeline for the glamorous, big-money stars first.
This year, we are even more spoiled for choice in the premium price category, with Erling Haaland (£11.5m) joining Mo Salah, Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, Trent Alexander-Arnold and the rest after signing for Manchester City.
But in order to accommodate the Premier League‘s best players in your team – or at least as many as you can within the confines of a £100m transfer budget – cost-cutting compromises have to be made elsewhere.
And with most bosses likely to own two or three of the same premium assets, identifying cheap, under-the-radar game-breakers early on is integral to making a fast start.
Due to FPL’s pricing bands per position, a budget-friendly player in one position is perhaps not so in another, so for the benefit of this article, we have classed players in the low-cost category as follows: goalkeepers (£4.0m to £4.5m), defenders (£4.0m to £4.5m), midfielders (£4.5m to £5.0m) and forward (£4.5m to £5.0m).
Here are some of the cheaper options to consider:
David Raya (Brentford)
After returning from a knee injury in February, David Raya accrued the fourth-highest number of points per game among goalkeepers (behind Alisson, Vicente Guaita and Hugo Lloris), according to Fantasy Football Fix. Six of Brentford’s first 10 opponents score two (the lowest mark) on FPL’s Fixture Difficulty Rating chart.
Position: Goalkeeper Price: £4.5m
Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest)
Neco Williams’ price tag would almost certainly have been £0.5m steeper had he joined Nottingham Forest from Liverpool before FPL’s launch date, rather than after it. The Welsh full-back impressed while on loan at Fulham last season, scoring twice and providing two assists in 14 Championship appearances.
Position: Defender Price: £4.0m
Andreas Pereira (Fulham)
Currently the fourth-most popular midfielder and sandwiched between Son and Philippe Coutinho is Fulham new-boy Andreas Pereira. Like Williams, Pereira was given his price tag prior to his departure from Manchester United and while unlikely to provide much in the way of attacking returns, he should at least be a starter for Marco Silva’s side.
Position: Midfielder Price: £4.5m
Djed Spence (Spurs)
There is definitely value to be found in the Tottenham defence: the key is identifying where. Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) could be a cheat code if he is Antonio Conte’s first-choice left wing-back, as could fellow new signing from Middlesbrough Djed Spence on the opposite flank. Spence scored twice and registered four assists in the Championship in 2021-22.
Position: Defender Price: £4.5m
Luke Plange (Crystal Palace)
So, who’s willing to take the plunge on Luke Plange? The teenager’s hat-trick against Ipswich in pre-season caught the eye of Crystal Palace fans and FPL enthusiasts alike. Palace beat out competition from rival Premier League clubs to his signing from Derby this summer and Plange could be the pick of the £4.5m forwards to begin with.
Position: Forward Price: £4.5m
Robert Sanchez (Brighton)
Brighton’s No 1 was a hugely popular pick this time last year and looks set to be again owing to his team’s kind early schedule. The Seagulls face Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening day but will not face another of last season’s top six until Gameweek 9 when they are in action against Liverpool.
Position: Goalkeeper Price: £4.5m
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester)
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Leicester, featuring 28 times in the league and on 44 occasions in all competitions. Although he only managed three attacking returns last season, Dewsbury-Hall was second only to James Maddison in the Foxes’ squad for chances created per-90 minutes, according to Fantasy Football Fix.
Position: Midfielder Price: £5.0m
Ben White (Arsenal)
With precisely zero goals or assists to show for his efforts in 2021-22, Ben White doesn’t exactly set the pulses racing when it comes to FPL. When it comes to starts, though, he is as dependable as they come – all 32 of his Premier League appearances came from the start. A useful fourth or fifth defensive option to own.
Position: Defender Price: £4.5m
Moises Caicedo (Brighton)
Ecuador international Moises Caicedo broke into Graham Potter’s XI towards the backend of last season, starting in each of Brighton’s final seven games. The box-to-box midfielder scored a dream first goal in English football against Manchester United during that run and he could have a bigger part to play in 2022-23 following Yves Bissouma’s departure to Spurs.
Position: Midfielder Price: £5.0m
Sven Botman (Newcastle)
Newcastle have encountered frustration in their pursuit of attacking reinforcements so far this summer, but Eddie Howe has bolstered his backline impressively. Nick Pope and Matt Targett are established Premier League players, but £37m Sven Botman is the most eye-catching recruit. The Dutchman scored three times for Lille in Ligue 1 last season.
Position: Defender Price: £4.5m
