Vivianne Miedema has been ruled out of the Netherlands’ Euro 2022 match against Portugal on Wednesday after testing positive for Covid.
In a statement, the Dutch national side confirmed the Arsenal forward “will therefore be in isolation for the next few days”, adding: “When she no longer has any symptoms and tests negative she can rejoin the selection.”
That will see her miss the game at Leigh Sports Village at the very least, with the Netherlands next in action in their final group game against Switzerland on Sunday 17 July.
Miedema is the second Dutch player to test positive at this tournament after Jackie Groenen, with Covid still having a sizable impact on this European Championship.
i understands that there are Covid testing protocols in place at the tournament, unlike some other sporting contests this summer – such as Wimbledon – where athletes were free to conduct their own testing.
England defender Lotte Wubben-Moy, Germany’s Lea Schuller, Italy’s Valentina Cernoia, Austria’s Laura Wienroither and Finland’s Tuija Hyyrynen have also missed matches due to Covid, making Miedema the seventh positive case since the tournament started a week ago.
After the news broke concerning Hyyrynen, Finland boss admitted “all players [are] scared of getting Covid”.
Austria forward Lisa Kolb also missed her country’s 1-0 defeat to England after testing positive, but she was ruled out early enough for a replacement to be called up.
Now that the group stages are underway, teams are no longer able to draft new players into their squads – though as it stands, there are no teams in danger of having to postpone matches due to being unable to meet the minimum matchday squad number of 13.
