Arjan Veurink: Assistant will lead England against Northern Ireland after Sarina Wiegman’s positive Covid test

Sarina Wiegman will miss England’s final Euro 2022 Group A match against Northern Ireland after testing positive for Covid.

The Lionesses manager is expected to remain in remote contact with her players and staff while she recovers at the squad’s base camp, with a view to returning to her role as soon as possible.

It is the first real stumbling block of the hosts’ European Championship as they prepare for Friday night’s dead-rubber tie. England have already qualified for the quarter-finals as group winners and Northern Ireland are out after losing their first two games.

Wiegman’s Arjan Veurink will be in the dugout January 2021 instead.

Veurink has worked alongside the England head coach since their time together on the staff of the Netherlands Women national side.

When Wiegman was appointed by the FA, she made a request that Veurink would be allowed to follow her.

Prior to that, the 35-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful spell as the head coach of FC Twente Women, winning four league titles and qualifying for the Uefa Women’s Champions League.

His role in England’s unbeaten record under Wiegman has not gone unnoticed either, with Netherlands boss naming the pair as one of the chief reasons the Lionesses can win the tournament.

“They’re very, very good,” Parsons said. “I think opponents watching the last 30 minutes will be worried. You have a top, top coach that’s been there and won it. Arjan and Sarina are doing some strong work.”
