Premier League clubs are wasting little time in upgrading their squads ahead of the 2022-23 season with a number of big deals completed already this summer.
Manchester City moved quickly to secure themselves a new centre forward, with Erling Haaland joining from Borussia Dortmund before Pep Guardiola’s side had even wrapped up the league title.
The 21-year-old struck 86 goals in only 89 games for the Bundesliga club and will be expected to provide a focal point and cutting edge that City occasionally lacked last term. City have also sourced a Fernandinho replacement with Kalvin Phillips arriving in a £45m deal from Leeds. Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella is reportedly next on Guardiola’s most wanted list.
Liverpool have also spent big to sign a new goalscorer with Darwin Nunez arriving for a club-record £85m fee from Benfica. While not a like-for-like replacement, it is expected that the 22-year-old will take Sadio Mane’s position in Jurgen Klopp’s front three with the 30-year-old leaving to join Bayern Munich.
Fresh from qualifying for the Champions League and convincing Antonio Conte to stick around, Tottenham have strengthened with Ivan Perisic joining from Inter Milan on a free transfer, Fraser Forster arriving from Southampton and Yves Bissouma signing for £25m from Brighton. Richarlison has also made a club-record £60m switch from Everton, while Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence have bolstered Conte’s defence.
Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal have also been busy, signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City and Portugal U21 playmaker Fabio Vieira from Sporting Lisbon. Jesus has been given the No 9 shirt at his new club and will replace Alexandre Lacazette in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up following the Frenchman’s return to Lyon.
Erik ten Hag is gradually rebuilding Manchester United, with Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez all being brought in and a deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong still dragging on. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo could be on his way out after declaring that he wants to play Champions League football next season.
Chelsea’s new owners have sought to address the lack of bodies in defence by signing Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to Spain’s big two. Romelu Lukaku has rejoined Inter on a season-long loan after a calamitous year in west London, while Raheem Sterling has completed a £47.5m move to Stamford Bridge.
Attention will be on Newcastle in what is the club’s first transfer window since being taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Eddie Howe has moved to strengthen his backline with Matt Targett’s loan from Aston Villa being made permanent and Nick Pope following in a £10m deal from Burnley. Howe has further bolstered his defensive options with the signing of Sven Botman for £37m from Lille.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa have provided significant backing to Steven Gerrard with Philippe Coutinho and Diego Carlos brought in for big fees and the highly-rated Boubacar Kamara signed on a free from Marseille, while Leeds have raided Jesse Marsch’s former club Red Bull Salzburg for midfielder Brenden Aaronson and right back Rasmus Kristensen.
The summer transfer window will officially open for business on Friday 10 June and close at 11pm on Thursday 1 September.
