The “Northern Notebook” is i‘s weekly look inside the biggest football clubs in the north of England, providing insight, analysis and news on the burning issues of the day
Newcastle are keeping a watching brief on Timo Werner, with Chelsea weighing up the striker’s future.
Juventus and RB Leipzig are also interested in the Germany forward but the Blues haven’t yet decided whether to sanction either a loan or permanent move.
The Magpies are looking at loan signings with potential clauses to turn them into permanent deals as they intend to “box clever” in the final month of the transfer window.
Everton in talks with Gueye after signing £20m McNeil
Everton are set to turn their focus to landing a central midfielder after completing a £20million move for Burnley’s Dwight McNeil.
The Toffees have signed two players this week, with a move for left-sided defender Ruben Vinagre on loan from Sporting confirmed on Wednesday.
They look set to cash in on forward Nathan Broadhead, who is in talks with Sunderland over a permanent move, while striker Ellis Simms is also joining the Black Cats on loan after turning down a move to Blackpool.
Everton’s focus is now on bolstering the spine of Frank Lampard’s side, with a midfielder at the top of the agenda. The club have been offered Paris Saint Germain’s Idrissa Gueye and talks over a potential return to Goodison Park have taken place.
i understands the club have put a block on Lewis Warrington leaving on loan for now, with Lampard impressed by the midfielder in pre-season. He may yet remain at the club for the first part of the season, although the Toffees have fielded plenty of interest in the 19-year-old, who impressed at Tranmere last term.
Everton kick off their season against Chelsea next weekend after a mixed pre-season. Some fans have protested against Farhad Moshiri’s running of the club but the Everton owner has urged supporters to judge them at the end of the transfer window.
After Richarlison left the club are still in need of further reinforcements. Everton have knocked back enquiries for Anthony Gordon and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
There is no truth in suggestions that full-back Nathan Patterson will be loaned out by the club after he featured heavily in pre-season under Lampard.
Hull owners reveal training ground plans
Hull City’s ambitious owners are hoping to secure a “virtual freehold” on the MKM Stadium before rolling out ambitious plans for the club’s training ground and Academy.
Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler revealed the developments are “waiting” as the club, which is now under the ownership of Turkish media mogul Acun Ilicali, talks to the Council about their intentions for the stadium.
“For organisations to thrive you need to develop your foundations,” Kesler explained to i.
“We have plans for our training ground to come back to the stadium and plans to improve our current stadium and pitch. We want to develop more local talent by improving our Academy structure. It’s all drawn up but it’s waiting.
“We’re in the final stages of getting the Academy buildings and pitches behind the stadium to relocate.
“But there’s a key factor in here. We are joint users of the stadium with the rugby team and we lease it from the Council. We have a big amount of time on our lease, however I’m trying to establish a virtual leasehold to be able to complete all of these projects.
“I don’t think any businessman in their right state of mind would invest on land or property if they have limited time to stay.
“I’m not saying we won’t stay, the town have been very supportive in terms of trying to do it and help us but in the end we need to come together and make sure we establish this contractual basis to be able to bring back and revitalise the stadium and Academy and develop it.”
