The Fantasy Premier League game is facing a backlash from its players, including tennis star Andy Murray, after its website and app appeared to crash for the second weekend running ahead of the Gameweek 15 deadline.
FPL managers, who were planning on making last-minute transfers or tweaks to their starting line-up or captain, were left bitterly disappointed when the website and app failed to respond. Some users have claimed that they were unable to make changes up to 20 minutes before the scheduled deadline of 1.30pm on Saturday.
There were complaints that there was a 503 server error on the website and an error message on the app, leaving some managers unclear whether their proposed changes were successful or not.
The Premier League’s official fantasy football game has soared in popularity in recent seasons, with over 10 million teams registered for the 2022-23 campaign, representing a new record.
In an effort to minimise early team leaks and potential misinformation, FPL moved the transfer deadline from an hour before kick-off in the first scheduled match of a gameweek to 90 minutes before, at the start of last season.
However, problems seem to have persisted with managers expressing their frustration at being unable to make important switches before a gameweek deadline.
The key talking point ahead of the previous two gameweeks has revolved around the availability of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, whose exploits have resulted in him being both the most owned and captained player in FPL history. Haaland is the leading points scorer this season with 117.
However, the Norwegian missed City’s 1-0 defeat against Leicester last weekend and was named as a substitute for their match against Fulham on Saturday.
On both occasions, there were leaks on social media before the FPL transfer deadline suggesting that he would not start, leading to some bosses moving to take him out of their teams. There has been speculation that the surge of managers looking to transfer out Haaland or else name a different captain, has contributed to the website crashing.
