Newcastle transfer news: Eddie Howe eyeing Armando Broja loan and Moussa Diaby deal after upgrading defence

Newcastle, Everton and West Ham are set to battle it out for wanted Chelsea forward Armando Broja this summer, with Thomas Tuchel still undecided on the striker’s future.

Everton joined the Magpies and West Ham in registering an interest in Broja earlier this week – and there is overseas interest in the Albania international after his superb stint on loan at Southampton.

i first reported Newcastle’s interest in Broja in May and they scouted him on the South Coast several times between then and the end of the season. A move for Reims forward Hugo Ekitike has stalled over agent demands and the player’s reluctance to move, although Newcastle haven’t shut that avenue off completely.

Broja is an alternative but Chelsea are uncertain about whether to sell or loan the player out and may yet opt to retain the 22-year-old, with Tuchel indicating a desire to see him in pre-season.

Newcastle, who have been at pains to point out they are operating within the constraints of Financial Fair Play, are thought to prefer a loan move which would facilitate other moves for attacking players.

They retain a long-standing interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby but the asking price of around £60million outstrips what the club are currently willing to pay.

Nevertheless, a move for the France international remains on the radar at St James’ Park and he is near the top of the wishlist of both Eddie Howe and the club’s scouting team. He comes heavily recommended by Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson.

After clinching a deal for Sven Botman last week, Newcastle’s recruitment momentum has slowed somewhat and the club are relaxed about their progress. But they still intend to be active in the market before the end of the transfer window.

There’s real satisfaction at the work done so far in the market – Nick Pope, Botman and Matty Targett have upgraded their defence – and they are content to see how the market develops. Several big transfers are due to go through in the coming weeks that could shape the outlook for teams looking for forward reinforcements.

Newcastle also need to sell players, with few takers so far for a slew of players who are unlikely to play significant minutes this season. Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle are all available for transfer but Championship clubs are finding it difficult to match the wages they are on at Newcastle.
