Aston Villa target Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares on loan as back up option to Marcos Acuna transfer

Aston Villa are exploring a loan deal for Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares as they assemble a back-up plan in case their move for Seville’s Marcos Acuna falls through.

Tavares was set for Nottingham Forest but that move collapsed on Saturday after negotiations broke down over a permanent £13m switch, i understands.

The 23-year-old is surplus to requirements at the Emirates and sporting director Edu has been trying to find a buyer for the Portugal U21 international as the Gunners look to raise funds for further squad strengthening.

Tavares had a mixed spell at Marseille but was impressive during the Euro U21 championships and has also attracted interest from West Ham. Forest, however, were the first club to make a move.

But negotiations over Tavares broke down over the weekend, with the player now considering other options both in the Premier League and overseas, with clubs in Italy and Germany interested. Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen have both made enquiries.

Most intriguingly for the player, however, Villa are understood to be exploring a deal as they look at alternative left-back options to top target Acuna.

A one-year loan deal with an option to make it permanent is on the table if they can’t make the Acuna deal work.

The Argentina international is Unai Emery’s top choice and personal terms have already reportedly been agreed. But there has, so far, been no agreement with Seville for a player who played the full 90 minutes against Manchester City in the European Super Cup last week.

Villa, with Emery working alongside Sevilla’s former director of football Monchi, have spent heavily as they assemble a squad to fight for European football.
