Harry Kane transfer: Tottenham give striker permission to undergo Bayern medical ahead of £86m move

Harry Kane has been granted permission by Tottenham Hotspur to fly to Germany to complete a medical ahead of his transfer to Bayern Munich.

It was reported early on Friday that Tottenham had told Kane to halt his plans while on his way to Stansted Airport but club sources say that is not the case.

Spurs accepted an offer of £86m – reaching close to £100m with add-ons – for the striker this week and it appears he is on the verge of leaving the club he joined almost two decades ago.

Kane will undergo medical tests in Munich on Friday and will finalise terms ahead of joining one of the world’s biggest clubs. It has been reported he will sign a four-year contract with the Bundesliga giants.

The 30-year-old has been weighing up whether to join Bayern to virtually guarantee winning silverware – they have won the German top-flight for 11 successive seasons – and giving him a realistic shot at lifting the Champions League trophy.

But it puts his chances of chasing down Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal-scoring record at risk. Shearer scored 260 Premier League goals, while Kane is currently on 213.

There has been some snootiness regarding the prospect of the England captain joining Bayern Munich rather than staying in the Premier League, despite the Bundesliga side having won the Champions League six times – joint third-most with Liverpool and behind only Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Analysis: Levy has failed Tottenham fans

Kane’s departure will pile further pressure on Spurs chairman Levy, even though he has managed to extract £100m from Bayern for a 30-year-old with less than 12 months left on his contract.

The timing, just before the start of a new season, puts Postecoglou in an extremely difficult position at the start of his tenure. Postecoglou has clearly been counting on keeping Kane having used him throughout pre-season.

It also indicates a failure on Levy’s part to create a team capable of satisfying his star player’s ambitions. The past few seasons have been an abject waste of Kane – and Son Heung-min’s – peak years, for which Levy, the main decision-maker during that period, is in no small part responsible.

Kane has always said that he would rather win trophies at Spurs than elsewhere; moving away to fulfill those aspirations would be a damning indictment of Levy and others’ inability to make that a realistic proposition.
