Participation in the Champions League may indeed cause fatigue, but you better believe that Newcastle United are full of confidence and strength until then. They produced a masterful attacking performance because they have so many weapons: Alexander Isak out wide or in the middle, Callum Wilson off the bench to score and Harvey Barnes with a cameo. Anthony Gordon impressed off the left. And then there are the runs from midfield from Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
Tonali was the star, though, given that this was his first competitive match in a new country. He scored, he played more progressive passes than anyone else, he tackled, he played short passes and then stretched the play with cross-field balls, he made late runs into the box and he protected possession with a swagger that supporters will instantly fall in love with. Newcastle haven’t got many transfers wrong recently; this one could be purely belter.
Newcastle are a top-four team by definition, but they are also picking up the dominant, bullying persona of the big team playing at home. In their last six matches at St James’ Park, Newcastle have scored three, four, five and six goals.
