Tottenham Hotspur have accepted a €100m (£86m) offer from Bayern Munich for Harry Kane.
Provided the striker agrees terms with the Bundesliga side it will bring to a close his 19-year association with the north London club where he will be remembered as a legend.
Kane has won three Premier League Golden Boots and runners-up medals in the Champions League and twice in the EFL Cup but, having recently turned 30, is keen to win trophies before he retires.
Serial Bundesliga winners Bayern would almost certainly guarantee that while they are also frequently one of the favourites to lift the Champions League.
While at Spurs, Kane has been the driving force behind the club challenging for the Premier League and reaching cup finals but they have been unable to get over the line. He has also becoming England’s all-time leading goal-scorer, overtaking Wayne Rooney.
Kane wanted his Tottenham future resolved before the start of the Premier League, which kicks off on Friday. He has only a year remaining on his Spurs contract and, had he not been permitted to move, intended to leave next summer on a free transfer.
Manchester United had enquired about the striker earlier in the summer but were put off by chairman Daniel Levy’s asking price of over £100m.
Comment: Why it’s time for Kane to go
Spurs aren’t going to be able to replace Kane, which is fine. That calibre of player is simply unattainable for a club of their spending power. But that doesn’t mean they can’t move on.
They have a new manager, Ange Postecoglou, with new ideas and, with the inevitable looming next year anyway, now is probably the right time to shape the future without the player everything has been moulded around for almost a decade of the recent past.
Sometimes letting go is hard. Especially letting go of someone Levy – and Spurs – have loved so much. But it’s reached the point where the Spurs chairman has to do that, or everyone will be filled with regret.
