Brentford 2-2 Tottenham (Mbeumo 26 pen’, Wissa 36′ | Romero 11′, Royal 45+4′)
Tottenham began life after Harry Kane with a hard-fought point at London rivals Brentford.
New manager Ange Postecoglou will have been heartened by James Maddison’s impact and the attacking output of his side in the absence of the club’s record goalscorer but there were some familiar defensive failings in the 2-2 draw.
Maddison delivered immediately with two assists on debut, including a vicious inswinging free-kick that teed up the opener for Cristian Romero.
But Romero’s departure immediately after his goal due to a head clash seemed to unnerve Tottenham and they soon found themselves behind.
Brentford’s equaliser came via Bryan Mbeumo’s coolly taken penalty after new Spurs captain Son Heung-min was adjudged to have tripped Mathias Jensen inside the area.
Yoane Wissa then fired the home side ahead, sending Rico Henry’s cut-back past Guglielmo Vicario thanks to a big deflection off Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven.
A chaotic first half ended with 11 minutes of injury time and another Tottenham goal with Emerson Royal drilling home from 20 yards out to make it 2-2.
The game settled in the second half and Spurs were fortunate to survive a penalty claim when Van de Ven appeared to make contact with Kevin Schade in the box.
